German Blade Museum Solingen

Clever platform solution for woodwork refurbishment

Thanks to SUPER facade scaffolding and clever load transfer, Prager Gerüstbau can guarantee the renovators access to the woodwork of the Solingen Klingenmuseum without having to anchor in the roof area. (Photo: Scafom-rux)

The history of the Westphalian town of Solingen, Germany, is closely linked to steel processing and the manufacture of cutting tools of all kinds. So it is only natural that the town's own blade museum should bear witness to their history. However, it is not only the history of the city's own production that is on display, but also a wide-ranging overview of the importance of cutting for the cultural and technical development of mankind. In addition to paintings and other works of art featuring blades and weapons, many important original exhibits are on display in the museum, which has been housed in the former Augustinian nunnery in the Gräfrath district since 1991. The aim: "an encyclopaedic look at the history of everything cutting" - so the statement on the museum's homepage.

But not everything at the museum survives time as undamaged as the exhibits made of steel, so that currently the renovation of the wooden work on the roof of the former convent is on the programme of the real estate management of the city of Solingen. For the scaffolding of the building in four construction phases, the local scaffolding company Prager Gerüstbau could be won, which, apart from the erection of modular stair towers, has specialised in façade scaffolding and special solutions. These were exactly what was needed, because in the mansard and roof areas there was no anchoring possibility for the façade scaffolding, and the distance from the main scaffolding to the area to be worked on was too great for bracket jibs.

For Marc Prager, planner of the scaffolding and representative of the 4th generation of the family business, which has been in existence since 1908, the solution was obvious: the loads were transferred to the anchor points below the free-standing areas by means of vertical lattice girders, and at the same time support was provided on the roof by means of swivelling threaded foot plates. The distance to the roof slope was bridged with platforms made of system-free scaffolding material - lattice girders, support rails, swivelling threaded foot plates and steel tube coupling scaffolding.

Depending on the construction phase, up to 1,000 m² of SUPER facade scaffolding was used, including accessories from the german manufacturer Scafom-rux, with whom Prager Gerüstbau has been working for decades. The service life for the renovation work is estimated until August 2022.
